SPICE by Red Hat

The challenge of virtualizing the trading desktop has been plagued by not having a protocol that meets the demands of the trading floor.

The SPICE protocol was acquired by Red Hat from Qumranet in 2008 and release as open source.  Red Hat saw the potential of both a virtualization platform and a protocol that would solve the problems with Microsoft RDP, VMWare View and Citrix ICA.

Spice approaches the problem of remote access differently.  Spice packages video instructions and sends them directly to the GPU on the host computer or thin client.  This bypasses low latency may of the processes that add rendering latency to give “under the desk” performance to a remote session on both LAN and WAN.

SPICE boasts:

  • Blistering performance.
  • Low Bandwidth.  (5 Mbit Max.)
  • Supports large resolutions.
  • Supports all video formats local to Windows.
  • Supports USB devices.
  • Supports Bloomberg.
  • Provides Real ROI as KVM and Spice costs are only $75 per session.
